You may find additional ideas or insights in Karen’s interpretation:

My daughter worked at an elephant sanctuary in Thailand recently, reading up on her blog really brought home my desire to spread the messages of the elephants.

~We are all family

Despite appearances in the Western world where there are small, individual families and that people are separate from the other animals, we are really all connected through blood or energy. This term “family” refers to the support system of our elders, contemporaries and youth.  The elephants are clear that we can all support each other as they do in their herds, that even though our blood-family units may be quite small, we should be open to being absorbed and incorporated into larger supportive units.  We can be supported and protected, and support and protect others, easier in a group.

~Love your mother and your nannies

All the nannies take care of the young, not just the mother.  The mother may lead the group, but the nannies protect each other in the rear.  Without nannies looking out for the calves they could be in great danger. We are urged to love and respect those that help us emerge successfully into adulthood.

~Support the world

Many hands make light work. If you feel it’s your turn to carry the weight of the world on your shoulders, do it with pride but then let go.  It’s okay to feel the problems of the world, just don’t dwell in them.  You are not helping anyone if you are overwhelmed to the point of inaction.  Support the world by doing just one small thing that fits your ability.  Take just one bite of what you feel is the larger issue, just one small bite, and you’ll find it’s ripple effect will bring more good than you realized.

~Be grateful of service

Elephants have served humans for hundreds of years, and now more and more humans are in service to the elephants. We cannot change what has happened, only our own present actions.  Respect and honor all life by first, being grateful to them for their service to the world, and then by engaging in respectful practices, recognizing the truth of love in every being, and serving where you are called.
